Researchers Find That Cannabis Helps Treat Fibromyalgia Pain

Fibromyalgia

Researchers in Israel have completed a study which indicated that marijuana may help treat some of the severe pain associated with Fibromyalgia, an often-misdiagnosed musculoskeletal disease that causes widespread pain.

No known cause or cure for fibromyalgia exists, CT Post reported. Participants that were active in the study for 6-months reported decreased pain and decreased intensity of pain.

The researchers said, “Our data indicates that medical cannabis could be a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of fibromyalgia, especially for those who failed on standard pharmacological therapies.”

A total of 367 fibromyalgia patients participated in the study. The findings included:

  • 1% reported success with marijuana treatment
  • 8% reported fibromyalgia-related depression symptom improvement
  • 4% reported getting a better night’s sleep
  • 9% said that their quality of life, including appetite and libido, improved

The researchers wish to conduct additional studies determining the impact of marijuana on additional symptoms related to fibromyalgia, including depression and anxiety.
