NY Governor: ‘Let’s legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana once and for all’

The 2019 legislative session starts in just a couple of weeks, and New York’s Governor is planning to push for recreational marijuana legalization in the state. Legalizing marijuana will be a part of the agenda for the first 100 days of the new session.

It’s estimated that recreational marijuana could generate $1.3 billion in state and local tax revenue annually, according to ABC 7 News. In New York City, the estimated tax revenue is $336 million.

This is a major change in opinion from Cuomo as just last year he was saying that marijuana is a gateway drug.

Cuomo said, “Let’s legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana once and for all.” This “is a much different year given the assault of the federal government. There’s no doubt that New York has to stand up for itself and we have to fight Washington and we have to protect ourselves and we need state laws that do that.”

New Yorkers have spoken as polls show that they want adult-use marijuana legalized.
