Former NFL Player Says He Played His “Best Games” While High

NFL Marijuana

Former NFL player Eben Britton says that his best games were often played while under the influence of marijuana. Britton played in the NFL for six seasons. The NFL does test for marijuana, but far less than it tests for other drugs.

According to Britton, 50 to 75 percent of NFL players use marijuana, reports The Washington Post. In 2015, the NFL suspended Britton, he has not returned to the league since.

Britton said, “NFL games I played stoned were some of the best games I ever played. Cannabis cements your surroundings. A lot of people say they’re useless when they smoke weed. But hell, I played NFL games [while stoned], dude. My performances were solid and I felt really good after.”

Several current and former NFL players have been urging the NFL to allow medical marijuana to be used as a method of treatment as a safer alternative to painkillers. Eugene Monroe, cut by the Baltimore Ravens in June, donated $80,000 to study marijuana use in NFL players to reduce reliance on opioids and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Monroe said, “There’s enough anecdotal evidence already to say, ‘Hey listen, we know it’s not toxic. We know it’s safer than what we’re already doing.”

Britton also stated, “Right after practice, me and one to three others [players] would go to somebody’s house [to get high]. Smoking helped me to socialize with teammates. We let our guards down…But a lot of the time [stoned talk] wasn’t even about football. Cannabis took us out of football. We were hanging out and just being people. It brought us closer together as teammates.”
