Anti-marijuana billionaire Sheldon Adelson purchased Nevada’s largest newspaper, The Las Vegas Review-Journal, in December 2015, and has not been shy about his bias towards marijuana. Once the purchase was completed, the editorial staff was sent to a drug treatment center in an effort to change their stance on pro-legalization. The first anti-marijuana article was recently published urging residents to vote no on the upcoming Question 2 Initiative that would legalize and regulate marijuana like alcohol throughout Nevada.
Adelson does not support medical or recreational marijuana, and publishing non-supportive content is his effort to slow down the legalization of marijuana in any form across the country. Before Adelson, The Las Vegas Review-Journal had not published an anti-marijuana article for several years, according to SF Gate.
An excerpt from the recently published article reads: “Legalizing weed would jeopardize the health of countless Nevadans, expose more people to drug abuse and addiction, put excessive stress on the state’s healthcare facilities and do little to relieve the state’s bloated prison population.”
Marijuana Policy Project’s Mason Tvert said, “It’s pretty obvious that this is the position of an overzealous newspaper owner and not that of an objective editorial board. Most Nevadans are already wary of Adelson, and now they are probably even more so given how glaring the hypocrisy is in this case. This is a guy who has made a fortune pushing booze on casino-goers, but wants to keep a much less harmful product illegal. Hopefully the Review-Journal will keep Adelson’s opinion confined to the opinion section and not let it leak into its new coverage.
