Former Attorney General Wants Marijuana Rescheduled

Eric Holder Marijuana

Former Attorney General, Eric Holder, says that it is time to consider decriminalizing and rescheduling marijuana in the U.S.

Holder suggests moving marijuana to a lower scheduling. He stated: “I certainly think it ought to be rescheduled. You know, we treat marijuana in the same way that we treat heroin now, and that clearly is not appropriate. So at a minimum, I think Congress needs to do that. Then I think we need to look at what happens in Colorado and what happens in Washington,” in an interview with PBS.

Holder was asked about public health issues and decriminalizing drugs. He said that “the whole question of should marijuana be decriminalized… that’s a conversation I think that we should engage in.”

Examining the progress in these states would help generate rescheduling and decriminalization discussions in Congress.

Two major benefits of rescheduling and decriminalizing marijuana would be that more scientific research opportunities on the medical benefits from marijuana would become available and law enforcement could focus more on violent crimes instead of non-violent crimes, such as simple marijuana possession and use.
